From a modest background, and reliant on UK government grants to learn music, Daryl became an award-winning composer, conductor and orchestrator who has excelled across nearly all musical genres, and for clients throughout the world, including India.
The Music and Image Society (MIS), run by Tanuj Tiku, is excited to have persuaded him to share his insights, and answer questions, in person with Mumbai’s film music community!
In his talk, Daryl will discuss how his upbringing, education and experiences both enabled and obstructed his career. He hopes that, by sharing his successes and failures, he can inspire other creatives to achieve their dreams by learning from his challenges and anecdotes.
After a few years as a BBC orchestral musician (violin and piano), and holding leadership positions at several London ballet companies, Daryl orchestrated Prokofieff’s Cinderella for Matthew Bourne in London’s West End & Los Angeles’ Ahmenson Theater, before moving onto orchestrations for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, as well as a number of BAFTA winning & nominated projects.
Previously a flag-ship composer for EMI/Sony ATV, Daryl is now co-owner and creative director of high-end production music label 2nd Foundation Music, as well as the owner of Maestro Music UK, a music production company specialising in music for film, television, video games and theatre, whose recent projects include Deadpool & Wolverine, The Acolyte and Barbie.
For clients and himself, he has conducted thousands of session recordings worldwide, including at Abbey Road and Air Lyndhurst in London, the Synchron Stage in Vienna and a variety of studios in Budapest. Sample projects include Amazon’s Rings of Power and Reacher, Marvel’s Moon Knight and Hawkeye, Disney+’s Diary of Wimpy Kid, and games including Call of Duty: Mobile and Palia.
He also conducted and orchestrated Christina Aguilera’s 2020 version of “Reflection” for Disney’s feature film, Mulan, and has done similar work for bands such as McFly.
Additionally, as a prolific composer and producer of library music, Daryl regularly orchestrates and/or conducts sessions for tracks which have appeared in places as diverse as Star Wars trailers, NFL programs, US presidential campaigns, Yellowjackets, Saturday Night Live, The Apprentice, along with adverts for Smirnoff, Maserati and Microsoft.
In terms of Indian films, he has orchestrated and/or conducted a variety of projects including: Tiger 3, Bhediya, Laal Singh Chaddha, Ajeeb Daastaans, Laila Majnu and Sonchiriya. In fact, he’s become a bit famous as “that English orchestrator that knows a surprising amount about Indian tax law!” And yes, he will be sharing this anecdote during the talk.
